Package Holidays - What to Consider Before Making a Booking Decision

So, you're thinking about taking a family holiday this year? You'll no doubt be looking for the most affordable package and the best destination. Before you make up your mind, you'll need to think about a few things:

  • When did you want to go? Is it important to you to go during the summer when your children are not in school, or can you go some other time of the year when prices are lower and more may be available.

  • Do you have a limit as to how long you can be away? Does your time off from work or other commitments limit you to a short stay? If your time off is short, you will need to consider how far you want to travel. There's no sense spending half of your vacation "on the road".

  • What destinations are of interest to you? You'll want to get all the family involved in this decision. Remember, everyone will be going so everyone should get a chance to give their opinion. You could make a shortlist first if you wanted to, and then let the family vote on their favorite.

  • What facilities and amenities do you want? A pool or a nearby beach would be at the top of most people's lists. Aside from those, do you want children's activities? How about evening entertainment? Proximity to a big town for shopping? You should make a list of what you want before starting your search for somewhere to stay.

  • Can you book this trip yourself or do you need a travel agent? It's cheaper to book online. If you have specific accommodation requests or complex requirements, or if you just have a lot of questions, you may need to hire a qualified travel agent.

  • When thinking about how much you can afford to spend on your holiday, remember to factor in less obvious costs, such as insurance, airport transfers, airport parking, taxis, souvenirs, ice creams, etc. The last thing you want to do is go away and be worrying about the fact that you've spent too much.

  • Do you need to book early as you're on a strict timeline or can you wait awhile in order to take advantage of last minute deals? Does it make you nervous to think that your first choices might not be available if you wait? How long you wait to plan a holiday depends on your time availability and if you don't mind switching to travel plan b or c.
Now that you've seen our list of what you need to "know-to-go", you'll need to make some decisions. There are some great cheap package holidays available right now, so what's stopping you? Make those plans!
